getting to know the australian labradoodle

history

socialization

temperament

The first Australian Labradoodle was created by a Royal Guide Dogs Association trainer who sought to create an allergy-friendly guide dog. The ALD is not the same as the "American" labradoodle, nor an "Aussie doodle". There are several breeds in the ancestry of the ALD lines including: Labrador Retriever, Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, Water Portuguese Dog, and Terrier.

temperament

Extremely clever, sociable, comical and joyful. Energetic when free and quiet when handled. Keen and easy to train. Should display an intuition about the emotional state or needs of the human handler. If you have met one, you have made a friend.

is this breed for me?

The Australian Labradoodle is a very social creature. You will learn that when you look into their human like eyes as they look into your soul. This breed enjoys human interaction and should be treated with respect and not left alone for large amounts of time. Quality early socialization is critical to imprint positive associations before age 16 weeks and should continue for the life of the dog.

This is a great breed! The ALD is adorably sweet and affectionate, incredibly smart, and easy to train but is not for the novice owner without training plans, inactive person, or someone who is never home. It is an athletic breed that requires daily exercise and mental stimulation.  Daily grooming and maintenance  are needed to maintain a beautiful and healthy coat.

The ALD coat is generally non-shedding and favorable for those with allergies and is not the same as other "doodles".  No dog is 100% allergy free however. We encourage families with allergy concerns to discuss with your physician as well as with us well in advance of puppy matching. We can do a t-shirt test to help assess tolerance if needed.

The ALAA protects and verifies every pedigree with specific ancestry information for each dog. The ALAA works diligently to ensure the authenticity of dogs and puppies registered in the database. We highly encourage pet membership to continue the education, advancement, and protection of the breed.
